Silver Lake—Rochester, Minnesota, Photography

It was a beautiful evening, so I grabbed an Americano at Caribou and walked around down at Silver Lake with my cameras. I forgot how nice it is down there. I’ve only been a handful of times since my childhood when we’d frequently stop down to feed the geese. Rochester, Minnesota, has been home to thousands of Canada Geese for decades now, although the city has made some changes down at the lake to try and deter the animals from nesting and living in and around the lake. All those native flowers and grasses you see in these photos are part of that effort, which you have to admit look pretty cool. And as you can see, we do still have a few geese in the park. Just not the thousands we once had.

Green Bakery, Wisconsin

I recently photographed a couple of food products for Green Bakery out of Colfax, Wisconsin. I had previously shot a bunch of their bread and mix products, so was just asked to photograph these latest products. Everything produced in their bakery is not only 100% gluten free, but also free of dairy, egg, soy, corn, peanuts, and tree nuts. The bakery is also a vegan facility, with no animal products used.

“People who are predisposed to gluten sensitive are more likely to develop other common food sensitivities, especially to dairy, eggs, corn, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts. These ingredients are clinically known to cause a host of mild to severe immune system and digestive reactions, in addition to the more typical allergies. That’s why Green Bakery products include NONE of these allergenic ingredients.”

“The concept for the Green Bakery gluten free bakery was initiated by Dr. Adiel Tel-Oren, a medical doctor licensed in Europe but residing in the U.S. Dr. Tel-Oren is the founder and owner of Ecopolitan restaurant in Minneapolis, MN, which specialises in raw, vegan, and organic cuisine. As part of his medical practice, Dr. Tel-Oren is a functional medicine doctor who treats many patients that have gluten intolerance. While Dr. Tel-Oren believes a fully raw vegan diet comprised primarily of fruits and vegetables is the healthiest diet, he understands the human preference for cooked products, particularly in the bread family.”

J. Carver Distillery for Mn Corn Growers Association

I’ve been shooting for Minnesota Corn Growers Association for about ten years now and always enjoy doing work for them. Typically they have me photographing agriculture, or farmers out in the field, but occasionally they’ll have me shoot one of their gatherings, such as their first Kernal Nation event at J. Carver Distillery in Waconia, Minnesota. Here, legislators, chamber of commerce members and others from the community came out to meet with area corn farmers and discuss agriculture today and its economic impact. This place uses grains grown right here in Minnesota to make vodkas, scotches, whiskeys and so on. It’s a very cool place, as you can see by the photos!

“This is the second year that the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) has hosted Kernel Nation events, which are held to further develop relationships and make connections between greater Minnesota residents and the corn farming community. Last Wednesday, MCGA hosted their first Kernel Nation event of 2017 in Waconia at J. Carver Distillery.

The night kicked off with a social hour and welcome before the distillery tour and tasting, followed by dinner, drinks and closing remarks from MCGA Executive Director Adam Birr. Individuals in attendance ranged from local chamber of commerce members, local legislators and representatives to corn farmers, MCGA members and staff.

Topics of conversation throughout the night covered the economic impact of corn and its vast uses, as well as MCGA’s leadership role and ag-related policies in the news. Attendees were very interested in Minnesota corn farmers’ initiative to become the most sustainable and environmentally responsible corn farmers in the United States. MCGA shared information on the farmer-led research through the Innovation Grant Program and highlighted corn growers’ investment in research that promotes sustainability and progress related to soil fertility, water quality and corn utilization.

Kernel Nation’s Waconia event allowed guests to bring up important discussion surrounding questions and information on corn farming and agriculture. Kernel Nation has one more event coming up shortly in Marshall on July 26.

A special thank you to our friends at J. Carver Distillery for hosting and providing great locally sourced spirits, along with our guests who came out to show support for Minnesota corn farmers.

Interested in learning more? Visit the KernelNation.com website for details.”

Syngenta via G&S Business Solutions

Being that I specialize in agricultural photography, I get a lot of calls and emails regarding the possibility of doing farm related shoots for various companies throughout the midwest. And because I absolutely love farm life photography, I also love getting those calls! These images from a shoot I did for Syngenta via G&S Business Solutions out of Raleigh, North Carolina. It was on the Jason & Amy Gillis farm over in Medford, Minnesota, and focused primarily on GPS technology and other valuable electronic equipment, including a computer, smartphone and ipad, out in the field.

Based in his hometown of Rochester, Minnesota, Dean Riggott specializes in many areas of photography, including commercial, corporate and editorial photography. Industrial photography and agricultural photography are two of his favorites. Dean is available to travel anywhere his van or a plane will take him, so call or send an email if you have a shoot you’d like to discuss!

Moka Java in LaCrosse, Wisconsin

As an architectural photographer in Minnesota, I shoot a lot of buildings! It’s a nice change form having to work with people, which can be a little stressful at times, especially for this introvert. Here are a few highlights of Moka Java in LaCrosee, Wisconsin, which I shot for I&S Group, which is based in Mankato, Minnesota. They do some awesome work and are one of my favorite architectural clients.

Another outtake while out photographing farmers with their vintage tractors in southern Minnesota for SEMA Equipment. I always love finding a great farm scenes to photograph and these sheep were too good to pass up! This was on a farm near Fremont, Minnesota. Nothing like traveling the backroads of rural America documenting life on the farm!

The Fremont Store

As an agricultural photographer based  in Rochester, Minnesota, who shoots primarily throughout the midwest, I am constantly out driving the backroads photographing farm life in rural America. A few weeks ago I was all over southern Minnesota photographing farmers with their vintage tractors for a project SEMA Equipment is working on. When passing through Fremont, Minnesota, I came upon this very old country store, which I had actually stopped to photograph in the past. But this time the lighting was absolutely beautiful as the sun was about to set, so I just had to stop.

The Fremont Store, located just south of Lewiston, Minnesota, was built in 1856 and still functions as a store today. It is currently owned and operated by 101-year-old, Martha Johnson, who lives right next door.

Highlights from Jackpot Junction in Morton, Minnesota!

A few weeks ago I was hired to do a big commercial hospitality photography shoot for Jackpot Junction in Morton, Minnesota. Along with the help of Minneapolis, Minnesota, producer, Bobbi Seaquist, we scheduled twelve models/talent from the Twin Cities area, as well as photography assistants, Joey Tichenor and Alex Butterfield, to work over three days at the casino. We shot in hotel rooms, coffee shops, gift shops, lobbies, restaurants, bars, the gaming floor, golf course and pro shop. We were on a very tight schedule, so timing and scheduling were of the utmost importance, but everything went as smooth as could be expected and it turned out to be a very successful and fun shoot! Below are some highlights!

Ballerina Botanicals Natural & Organic Skincare!

I was recently hired to do some product photography for an upstart company here in Rochester, Minnesota, called Ballerina Botanicals. Michaelene Karlen and her mother, Michelle Karlen, started making natural and organic skincare products for their own personal use a few years back and eventually had so many people asking them for it that they decided to start this company, and bam, things just took off! Now Michaelene, who was pursueing a professional dance career after spending a few years at a prestigious dance school in New York City, works full-time researching, making, marketing and selling Ballerina Botanicals skincare products. Their products are made with 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils. Every single ingredient is listed, so you will never have to question what you are putting on your skin. All products are cruelty-free and toxic-free. So how awesome is that?!

“We have a holistic approach to life because we feel it is important to keep harmful toxins, preservatives, and words we cannot pronounce out of our body. The simple life is a better life…period. This goes for our products too, because sometimes less is really more.” — Michaelene & Michelle Karlen.

Future farmer

A young boy plays on his father’s old John Deere tractor on the family farm near Red Wing, Minnesota. I shot this while on a commercial shoot for SEMA Equipment, which has been one of my agricultural clients for a few years now. I absolutely love doing farm life photography, so was thrilled to be shooting a series of portraits of farmers with their old, often restored, John Deere Tractors, for a calendar they are putting together.
